Move Out Drive 2025

Mission

May’s festivities are upon us and with that launches Georgetown University’s annual Move-Out Drive! The Move Out Drive is Georgetown’s end-of-the-school-year contribution to our community and the environment, inviting you to “re-purpose your packing” by donating gently used household items to local charities. The Office of Neighborhood Life and GU Planning and Facilities Management will work to collect your donations and give them to those living in poverty in the DC region.

Our non-profit partners in 2025 include the Father McKenna Center, Community Forklift, The Family Place, Bread for the City, Turning the Page, Central Union Mission, Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Pathways to Housing, La Cocina, Salvation Army, So Others Might Eat, Interfaith Works.

In 2024, the Move Out Drive diverted 48,000 pounds of materials valued at $317,000. With the University’s students, faculty, staff, and community support of this initiative, we hope to give back even more this year while doing our best to keep our neighborhoods clean.

Placing Items Out for Collection

Place donations and bulk trash items in separate piles in front of (curbside) or behind (alley) your property between 8AM and 9AM on the day you signed up for collection. Tape pink donation tags and blue bulk trash tags on various items to differentiate the piles. If you scheduled bulk trash and donations to be collected on the same day, please make it clear which items are trash and which are donations using the appropriate tags. They should be in neat, separate, organized piles.

We encourage you to go through your property to discard and donate items earlier in May rather than later. You are not limited to one donation or bulk trash collection day, so please start getting rid of unused items early. Donations and bulk trash pickups have daily sign up limits, so please plan accordingly and be as accurate as possible about the items you will place outside.

IMPORTANT: Each morning, ONL will send a list of properties scheduled for pick up to the DC Department of Public Works (DPW) to ensure properties signed up and displaying Georgetown University Move-Out Drive pink/blue tags on their piles of donations and bulk trash do not get cited by the city. If you do not 1) sign up in advance, 2) mark your donations/bulk trash with Georgetown University Move-Out Drive tags and 3) Put your items out between 8 am and 9 am the day of your pickup in separate, neat piles, you are at risk of receiving a citation from DPW.

For apartment complexes, please write specific instructions in your pick-up request on where your items are located outside of your building (ie. Pick up from alley behind building).

Tips for Successful Donation and Bulk Pick-Ups

This is an example of a how donations and bulk items should be placed for pick-up:

  • Items are in neat and organized piles.
  • Items are stacked, and packed in bags, containers, or boxes (no loose items or scattered trash)
  • Items are at the appropriate location (Front Curb or Back Alley) on the day of pick up between 8 – 9 am.
  • Items are not blocking the sidewalk or spilling out onto the street

This is how NOT to place your items out for pick-up. Items in this condition may not be picked up and will be at risk of a citation from DPW.
